Ways of seeing: Peace process data-viz as a research practice

چکیده

This article uses John Berger’s idea (1972) that images are connected to ‘ways of seeing’ reflect on the creation interactive visualizations peace agreement and process data. We three created during a three-year long collaboration. first describe our data, peacebuilding ambitions for its use, why we produced forms visualization. Second, how producing these an interdisciplinary conversation collaboration, which also different epistemic geographic communities involved in processes. term this ‘visualization-as-scoping’. Third, both ‘what saw’, through visualization, it affected policy, lessons learned regarding visualization field. In article, argue experience ‘visualization-as-scoping’ inverts traditional assumptions about connection data policy influence. place notion visualization-as-communication, focused transmitting clear ‘messages’, point visualization-as-scoping as practice interchange, critique re-iteration. Using Berger inspiration, suggest result can usefully disrupt singular prescriptions, rather enable people grapple better with complex political processes they in.
